Sac County Veterans Memorial

September, 2008

The Sac County Veterans Memorial Committee has approved contract documents from the The Design Partnership, Edward Soenke/architect, of West Des Moines, Iowa.

The Memorial will be located in the front lawn of the Sac County Courthouse in an elliptical form, just north of Highway 20. Consisting of a raised concrete platform with pavers covering the slab and, in turn, supported by thirty 4'-0" deep concrete piers, the platform is flush with grade at the rear (courthouse) end for wheelchair accessibility, and is approached in the south front via three lighted stone risers to give a monumental appearance from the highway.

The entire 46' - 0" long dais (platform) is framed with 8" thick rough-cut Kasota stone and four 9' - 0" long smooth stone benches on the diagonals of the platform to view seven lighted granite tablets that are 8'- 0" high and 7' - 0" wide; these tablets are surrounded by 12" rough-cut Kasota stone with sealed smooth-finish tops. All of the tablets are lit from both sides with veterans' names engraved on the panels facing the center and the five service insignias facing the exterior, along with a description of the memorial on the remaining two tablets.

The center-facing tablets are comprised of three 1" thick vertical polished granite panels for listed names, 20 3/8" wide and 6' - 8" high, so that each panel can be modified or repaired without compromising the entire tablet.

In the center of the surrounding granite/stone tablets is a lighted 5' - 0" long Kasota stone directory tablet that serves as a key to locating the appropriate tablet with the carved names of veterans from Sac County who have honorably served.

To the rear of this elliptical dais are three lighted flagpoles with the United States, State of Iowa and KIA/MIA flags. The flag area is centered on a stamped concrete slab that joins stamped concrete walkways connecting to the existing sidewalks on the courthouse site.

This monument is constructed of extremely durable materials and is built in such a way to endure with minimal maintenance for many decades to come.
